WHATS INCLUDED

Discover the components of your Memory Assessment

  • Initial GP Consultation

Your assessment begins with a private GP consultation to take a full medical history, review current medications, discuss your concerns in detail, and ensure you are clinically prepared for the assessment. This is also where we identify any reversible causes of cognitive symptoms that should be addressed before or alongside the specialist review.

  • Comprehensive Blood Panel

We test for a broad range of conditions that can cause or contribute to cognitive symptoms — including thyroid dysfunction, vitamin B12 and folate deficiency, iron and anaemia markers, inflammation (CRP and ESR), liver and kidney function, blood glucose and HbA1c (diabetes risk), and cholesterol and lipid profile. Many causes of memory problems are reversible — ruling these out is essential before any diagnosis is made.

  • MRI Brain Scan

High-resolution MRI — not CT — assessed by a specialist neuroradiologist. MRI provides a far more detailed picture of brain structure than CT scanning, allowing us to assess atrophy patterns, white matter changes, vascular contributions, and structural abnormalities. This is the gold standard for private dementia imaging.

  • Formal Cognitive Testing

A detailed neuropsychological assessment measuring memory, attention, language, processing speed, and executive function to highlight strengths and uncover subtle changes.

This is carried out by our inhouse specialist memory pyschiatrist

  • 90minute Consultation with Memory Specialist Consultant

The core of your assessment. Dr Sajjadi conducts a detailed clinical interview exploring your history, symptoms, cognitive concerns, and lifestyle — combined with formal neuropsychological testing measuring memory, attention, language, processing speed, and executive function. This is a full specialist assessment, not a brief cognitive check.

  • Diagnosis & Prescriptions

Dr Sajjadi issues a formal diagnosis as part of this appointment. You will leave knowing what is causing your symptoms — whether that is dementia, mild cognitive impairment, a reversible condition, or normal age-related change. No referral elsewhere. No waiting for a letter. A clear answer, explained in full.

Where medication is appropriate, Dr Sajjadi can prescribe on the same day. Treatment can begin immediately — whether that is a dementia medication, a supplement to address a deficiency, or another intervention identified during your assessment. There is no separate prescribing step or additional wait.

  • Written Medical Report

A comprehensive written report documenting your assessment, findings, diagnosis, and recommended care plan — produced by Dr Sajjadi and your GP. This report is yours to keep and can be used to support discussions with your NHS GP, DVLA licence guidance, legal and financial planning including Lasting Power of Attorney, applications for Attendance Allowance and council tax reduction, and onward referral to neurology or other specialists where needed.

WE STAY WITH YOU - ONGOING CARE

A diagnosis changes everything.
Dr Sajjadi remains your consultant after diagnosis. Medication reviews, care plan adjustments, and family consultations continue through The Private Doctors. The same clinician who assessed you and knows your case. That continuity is built into how we work.

ADDITIONAL DIAGNOSTIC OPTIONS

Full Body MRI

Where TruCheck cancer screening is not clinically suitable, full body MRI may be recommended according to your medical history and clinical findings, offering broader imaging insight across multiple body systems where additional structural screening is appropriate.

CT Calcium Score

Provides deeper cardiovascular risk assessment by identifying coronary artery calcification.

Common Questions

  • Who should consider a memory assessment?

Anyone who has noticed changes in their memory, concentration, language, or daily functioning — or whose family or GP has raised concerns.

You do not need to be certain something is wrong. Many people come to us precisely because they want reassurance, and we are just as well placed to provide that as we are to diagnose.

If you have been told there is a long NHS wait, or if you have had an inconclusive assessment elsewhere, a private assessment can provide clarity quickly.

  • What are the early symptoms of dementia?

Early symptoms vary depending on the type of dementia, but commonly include: forgetting recent events or conversations while remembering older memories clearly; difficulty finding the right word mid-sentence; getting confused in familiar places; struggling to follow complex conversations or instructions; changes in mood, personality, or social behaviour; and difficulty with planning, organising, or managing finances. Not all of these symptoms indicate dementia — many have other causes — which is precisely why a thorough assessment is important.

  • What are the causes of memory loss?

Memory loss has many causes, not all of them dementia. Common reversible causes include thyroid dysfunction, vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, iron deficiency anaemia, urinary tract infections, sleep disorders, depression and anxiety, medication side effects, and alcohol use. Our assessment tests for all of these alongside the neurological assessment — so you leave knowing exactly what is causing your symptoms, and with a plan to address it.

  • What happens during a memory assessment?

A memory assessment looks at your symptoms, medical history, mood, sleep, medication, day-to-day function and cognitive performance. We combine this with blood tests and MRI brain imaging, before review by a Consultant Memory Psychiatrist.

  • Can an MRI brain scan diagnose dementia?

An MRI brain scan does not diagnose dementia on its own. It helps look for other causes of symptoms, such as strokes, vascular change, fluid build-up or structural problems, and may show patterns of brain change that support a diagnosis.

  • How quickly can I get a private dementia diagnosis?

Most patients complete the full assessment pathway and receive their diagnosis within one week of their first appointment. In some cases, where clinical findings are straightforward, a diagnosis can be reached at the assessment consultation itself. We can typically offer appointments within 5–10 working days of your initial enquiry.

  • Are there new treatments for Alzheimer’s disease?

Yes — for the first time, disease-modifying treatments for Alzheimer's disease are now available. Leqembi (lecanemab) and Donanemab (Kisunla) both target amyloid plaques in the brain and have been shown to slow cognitive decline in early-stage Alzheimer's disease. Critically, both treatments require a formal diagnosis of early-stage Alzheimer's to determine eligibility. This makes early assessment more important than it has ever been — if treatment is to be considered, a clear clinical picture must be established before the disease progresses.

  • Do we continue to see patients after diagnosis?

Yes. Dr Sajjadi remains your consultant after diagnosis. Follow-up appointments, medication reviews, adjustments to your care plan, and family or carer consultations are all available through The Private Doctors. You will never be handed back to your GP with a report and no ongoing support. For many families, this continuity is the most important part of what we offer.

  • Can the written report be used for legal or financial planning?

    Yes.

The written medical report produced following your assessment can be used to support a wide range of practical and legal matters — including discussions with your GP about NHS treatment and referral, DVLA guidance on fitness to drive, applications for Lasting Power of Attorney, applications for Attendance Allowance and council tax exemption, and evidence for care needs assessments.

Our team can advise on how best to use your report for your specific circumstances.
