SPECIALIST IMAGING
Full Body MRI
Assess major body systems without the use of ionising radiation.
PROVIDES DETAILED STRUCTURED IMAGING
A full body MRI provides detailed assessment of major body systems without exposure to radiation. It offers high-resolution imaging of key areas including the brain, spine, abdomen, and pelvis, helping to identify abnormalities that may warrant further clinical evaluation.
This assessment is often chosen by individuals seeking a comprehensive overview of their health, particularly where there is a personal or family history of illness, or a wish for proactive health screening.

Common Questions
Which body parts are included?
Full-body MRI focuses on major organs, the brain, spine and pelvis.
This scan includes
Brain - including brain vessel imaging
Whole spine - including C/T/L spine
Chest
Abdomen - liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, adrenal glands, kidney and abnormal lymph nodes.
Pelvis - with gender specific prostate or gyneacological imaging
Limbs and joints are not routinely included unless clinically indicated - they can be added on for an additional fee.
What should I know before arranging a full-body MRI?
A full-body MRI typically takes between 60 and 90 minutes, depending on the areas being assessed.
You will be asked to remain still while detailed images are obtained, although breaks can be accommodated if needed to ensure comfort throughout the examination.
In most cases, no special preparation is required, though suitability is assessed particularly where there are metal implants, previous surgery, pacemakers or other medical devices.
All images are subsequently reviewed by specialist radiologists, with results discussed during consultant follow-up
How long does the scan take?
Most full-body MRI appointments take between 60 and 90 minutes, depending on the protocol used and whether additional sequences are required.
Who should consider a full body MRI?
A full body MRI may be considered by adults who wish to gain broader insight into their health, particularly where there is family history of significant disease, personal health concern, or interest in establishing a structural health baseline.
It is often chosen by patients seeking additional reassurance as part of a proactive health assessment.
It may also be appropriate for patients with a previous history of cancer where broader structural imaging is clinically helpful, including situations where blood-based cancer screening tests such as Trucheck are not be suitable.
What can a full body MRI detect?
It may identify abnormalities affecting the brain, spine, abdominal organs, pelvis, bones, and soft tissues.
It can detect findings such as cysts, nodules, disc disease, selected tumours, vascular abnormalities, and other structural changes that may require further clinical review.
Who is a full body MRI not suitable for?
A full body MRI may not be suitable for patients with certain implanted medical devices, pacemakers, metal implants, or retained metal fragments.
It may also not be appropriate for individuals who are unable to lie still for the duration of the scan or who experience significant claustrophobia.
What are the limitations of a full body MRI?
A full body MRI can identify structural abnormalities, but not all findings are clinically significant.
Some abnormalities may require further investigation even when harmless, while very small lesions or early-stage disease may not always be visible.
A full body MRI does not replace established screening programmes such as mammography, bowel screening, cervical screening, or prostate assessment where clinically appropriate.
